There is an on and off switch on the lower back so you can turn it off when not needed. Next comes the adjustments. You can set this light up so it will come on at twilight, stay on, or work by motion sensor only.
With that being said it can be used as an outside security light just set it to come on when the sun starts going down, or you can use it the way we do, as a night light of sorts. But before I get into that let me tell you about the other features. It includes a small screwdriver to adjust the setting switches on the front. They are easily accessible and the instructions are complete and easy to follow! The left adjustment is to set it to stay on, come on at twilight or come on with the motion detector only. The second switch is the amount of time it stays on, which is adjustable from 25 seconds to 3 minutes to 5 minutes. Perfect for any given situation. The third switch the the sensing distance for the motion detector, which ranges from 2 m (about 6 feet) to 6 m (about 18 feet) to 10 m (about 30 feet). It is very sensitive and was able to pick up the slightest movements I made.
The bulb is 475 lumens and is rated at 27.4 years based on 3 hours per day. It is only uses 9 watts of electricity though, which according to the literature with it would cost about $1.18 per year, based on 12 cents per kilowatt. Our electric is actually less than that so I can run it for the year for under $1.00.
We have small children and this is perfect! We placed it in the hall so that if any of them get up, it will come on which is two fold. It allows them to see the bathroom, and it will wake us up without waking up the baby. I like to be awake if our three year old gets up for any reason.
We also use it at bed time. We have it set up on 25 seconds, which works great. We can make our rounds, make sure the lights are off, the kids are tucked in, etc. and then walk to the bed still being able to see so that we don't run into furniture. The light shining in from the hallway is just enough to see and then 25 seconds later it goes off. It is a great safety feature so we can see without running into the furniture and without having to get up and turn a light off.
I think this light is perfect for anyone! Those with children or adults with health concerns would definitely benefit from it!
Set up is simple, plug it in and turn the switches to the setting you want, that's it, no wires, no batteries. Perfect. It also has a switch on the back so if you do not have ceiling lights this allows you to light a room by simply plugging it in!
